A woman was carrying a basket full of eggs in a market. A soldier’s horse hit her and all her eggs broke. She demanded compensation; soldier agreed and said he will pay only if woman could tell the exact number of eggs in her basket.
The illiterate woman said
“I cannot count but when I draw two two eggs, I was left with one egg in the basket.
Similarly if I remove 3-3 eggs, I am left with 1.
If I remove 4-4 eggs, am left with 1.
If I draw 5-5 eggs, am again left with 1.
If I draw 6-6 eggs, am left with one egg in the basket.
But when I draw 7-7 eggs my basket is empty."
The Soldier compensated her for the minimum number of eggs in the basket.
How many eggs were in the basket?
